Course Description

This course prepares the registered nurse for specialty practice in the area of nephrology. Significant focus is placed on the required nursing care for unpredictable and complex client scenarios. Students will work through advanced case studies that promote development of the in-depth knowledge, decision-making and collaboration skills required to care for the most vulnerable and unwell clients of this population. Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy and hemodialysis in the critical care environment, managing client deterioration during treatments at home and in the community, advanced care planning, and working with marginalized communities are some of the topics addressed. Critical thinking and reasoning skills will be required to identify actual or potentially life-threatening alterations in homeostasis and, utilizing evidence-based resources, develop client and family-centred interventions. To be successful with all learning objectives, each student is required to participate fully in all individual and collaborative learning activities.

This course is delivered online and includes both synchronous and asynchronous components. Learners may be required to attend scheduled online sessions on set days; however, sessions are typically recorded and can be viewed later. Additional coursework is completed independently, allowing for flexibility.
